About Me

My photo
I've been crocheting for over 30 years, and come from a family of yarn and fabric artisans. I learned to sew from my Grandmother who made several quilts a year entirely by hand...one for each child, grandchild, and great-grandchild. Life situations and changes caused me to take a chance and open my first Etsy shop in Feb. 2011. A few successful months later, I opened my second Etsy shop as BeccaTheBaker...and later in 2011 opened my third Etsy shop as BeyondCrochetToo. I'm a single mother of 2 teenagers (a girl and a boy), plus 2 cats. I'm a 5th generation Native Californian (Northern California. And am happy to be back on the West Coast in the Pacific Northwest where I belong.

Pumpkins, Spice, and Everything Nice....How I Love Fall!

"The bright summer had passed away, and gorgeous autumn was flinging its rainbow-tints of beauty on hill and dale." ~Cornelia L. Tuthil

It's no secret that Fall is my favorite time of year. I love everything about it. From the cool, crisp chill in the air, to the warm, rich colors of cranberry reds, golden yellows, pumpkin oranges, and all the wonderful shades of browns and greens. Love it!! Add in all the wonderful tastes and smells like apple and pumpkin pies, warm spices such as cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg, plus every pumpkin and pumpkin spice concoction one could imagine...and you've got a Season that sparks all the Senses. What's not to love??

I've been trying to find the best shades to represent the Season, and have been working steadily to bring an assortment of Fall-inspired items to my Etsy shop. There you'll find a nice assortment of headbands, scarves, cowls, mandala table mats, amigurumi, and more...

Here's just a sample of some of my Fall Favorites:

It's Been Way Too Long....

Good grief!! 4 1/2 years since I last posted!! :o

Well, needless to say, a lot's happened since then. In early 2013 I started feeling very ill and it was found that I was having gallbladder issues. After my gallbladder removal, my condition and symptoms kept getting worse and I was later diagnosed with the chronic illness Gastroparesis. Over the past 3 years my conditions have worsened and developed into several other Auto-Immune diseases, including but not limited to: Leaky Gut Syndrome, Inflammation, and Chronic Fatigue. I won't go into all the details of that journey, other than to say it took a LONG time to find the right doctor to help manage and try to treat my conditions. It's been a long, difficult journey, and one I'm still struggling with every day.

Because of my illness and all that comes with it, I could no longer keep 3 shops going. In 2013 I closed BeccaTheBaker on Etsy, but still post and share Vegan recipes on Facebook and Twitter.

Unfortunately, I was unable to give BeyondCrochetToo the loving attention it needed and it got lost among all the other great Etsy artisans out there. In August 2015, I decided to close BeyondCrochetToo and combine items into one large shop emporium in my original shop BeyondCrochet. It was a humbling decision, but one that I'm happy with. It taught me to slow down and not take too much on at one time. "Slow and steady wins the race."

It's ironic that my shop and I first became known and recognized for my turtles. That was completely accidental, and not what I thought I'd be known for when I first started out. But, it's fitting, and I love being "the turtle lady". Turtles are symbolic of walking our path in peace and sticking to it with determination and serenity. As well as: Ability to stay grounded, even in moments of disturbances and chaos; Slowing down, pacing yourself; Determination, and persistence; Emotional strength and understanding.

Thank you for reading my story, and joining me on my journey. All the support and kind words from my customers mean more to me than I can possibly say. Thank you so very much. - Becca

Spring is in the Air

I know that according to a groundhog we're supposed to be in for a long Winter. But, here in Oregon the flowering trees are starting to bud, the robins are out making their nests, and there's a feel in the air that tells me Spring is just around the corner. Even the stores are already selling beautiful bouquets of tulips, freesias, and daffodils....I even saw a few snapdragons already. :D

I love Spring! It's one of my favorite Seasons (Fall is #1). All the beautiful colors, sweet baby animals, and the overall sense of newness and new beginnings...what's not to like?

And since I'm already experiencing the newness and new beginnings in my own life, it seems only natural to me that I would gravitate immediately to wanting to work on Spring related items for my shops.  :)

1st of my new line of Bunny Ballerinas

Looking through my activities list on Etsy, shows me that I'm not the only one. Bunnies and Spring chicks are showing up everywhere...and I'm loving it! My Pinterest board for Spring/Easter is already extremely full and I'm finding new and exciting items to list almost every day. Love, love, love it!

BeyondCrochet will be adding more bunnies like the one pictured above, as well as some other bunnies including boys. And I'm working on expanding the selections of other animals currently listed in bright fun Spring(ish) colors.

BeyondCrochetToo will have Spring colored apparel/accessories, including hats and thinner, lighter scarves....working on ideas for more product lines as I go along.

And last, but not least: BeccaTheBaker is working on some delicious Seasonal recipes to share with you all. In the world of cooking, I always associate lemons with Spring...so there will definitely be some new lemon recipes for dessert; plus a few other Easter favorites passed down through my family.

I can't wait to get all these new listings available to you!! :)

I know I'm not the only one with Spring fever, so are you ready for the Seasons to change too? And what Spring items are you listing or currently working on? What Spring items would you like to see/find? - Not necessarily from me, but in general?

To List or Not to List...That is the Question

I mentioned in my last post that I have several finished items to list, but no mannequin body or head to display them on...and that is still currently the case. And since I'm waiting on my tax return before I can order said display items, I'm pondering back and forth whether I should go ahead and list them now without a display model or just be patient and wait. My thinking is: "I can always go back later and change the pics to ones using the displays." But my concern is: I don't want it to look cheap. - Not that the current styro-foam display head is glamorous by any means! lol

But, to have a mix of photos showing some items on display heads, and others just laid out on, say, a table may end up making my shop look "cluttered"....and we all know "cluttered" is not good.

Poor lil' alien looking head....gone, but not forgotten.

On the other hand: I'm visualizing sale opportunities pass me by. And this is especially troubling since I missed out on Christmas and End-of-Year sales. In other words, I'm just not sure what is the lesser of two evils, so to speak.

So I'm reaching out and asking you all for your opinions....list now by neatly laying each item out on a flat surface (such as my table) and change to better display pics later? Or wait until I can display the way I would like using props? - Please keep in mind, by waiting it won't be until the end of the month before I can post new listings which means I missed Valentine's sales. :/
Your opinions and constructive criticism is appreciated.

The pretty new head, minus wig.

Just the top layer of the bin of items to list.

Hats, hats, and more hats...

Catching Up

Wow! Over a month since I last posted anything here. It was never my intention to be away so long, even with the move and everything it was always in the back of my mind to write a post catching up on all that's been going on the past month or more, and what I have planned in the near future. So I figure now is the time to stop procrastinating and get it done. :)

To start, I finally moved from Florida to Oregon like I've been saying I was going to do for nearly a year. lol. Although we arrived in Corvallis VERY early in the morning (4 AM) on December 18th, it wasn't until January 20th that we were able to move into our new apartment. 32 days straight in a motel (not counting the 8 days we were on the road staying in a new motel each night) is NOT something I recommend. All though we tried to get out and explore the town as often as we could, we were still pretty "housebound" by bad weather and a severe case of the flu for myself and my daughter. Thank goodness I had my giant bag of yarn to keep me occupied.

The overly crammed car with my son, Chester the Amigurumi Tiger, and the Giant Ziploc bag of yarn in the window.

Finally January 20th arrived and we moved into our wonderful, comforting new home.....and it was truly worth the wait. We love it here! It feels like it's always been home, just waiting for us to find it. :)
Since we moved here along with my parents (they of course have their own apartment), we had to combine all of our belongings from both households into one moving container and a lot got left behind for the family that bought my parents house (who had lost all of their own belongings in a fire), or donated to charity, or given away to now former neighbors. So right now I have very little furniture, other than our beds, a couple of bookcases, the card table my laptop is on, and the rocking chair I got when my son was born (currently the only chair in the apartment - lol). But, the kids and I are having fun looking at new furniture and decorating ideas to make the most of our smaller space. All in all, we're just happy to finally be here....we've waited longer than any of you can imagine to have this kind of life and freedom from the negative situations we left behind. :)

One of the things I am missing right now, that I had to leave behind due to lack of room, was my mannequin head that I used for my BeyondCrochetToo shop. Although she was a little scary looking, she was very helpful in getting my new items listed. I was hoping that I would be able to buy a new, more professional looking mannequin as well as a nice dress form, but that needs to wait a little longer (hurray for tax returns! lol).  Once it arrives I'll be listing all the new items I made while in the motel, and the few I've finished working on the past few days here at home....about 20 items in all! - Several hats in various styles, ear-warmer headbands that I designed, several beautiful, soft, and cozy scarves, and a thick, warm, and luxuriously soft cowl.

In the meantime, I've been trying to work on some items that can be listed without the use of a mannequin, such as the new Starfish Washcloths I recently started listing, and amigurumi for my BeyondCrochet shop.  I have so many ideas I want to work on, but so little working room right now to do them.

One of the Starfish Washcloths newly listed at BeyondCrochetToo

Since we were moving during Christmas and New Year's, I feel a little lost creatively. I had so many projects I wanted to work on for that Season of the year, that it's kind of thrown me that Valentine's Day is here already....and then St. Patrick's. I'm starting to think I should just skip past the pinks and reds and head straight for green. LOL. It's all been such a whirlwind, but I know it will soon start to go back to a comfortable pace again. And although business-wise it's always a good idea to follow the Holidays and Seasons, I personally don't like feeling "trapped" creatively by the use of certain colors, etc....especially when I went so long without really having the freedom to make what ever hit my fancy. So, I guess I need to find that balance again of going with the flow while still letting my love of all the different Holidays and Seasons shine through. :)

I'll try to pop in here a LOT more often. It's been awhile since I did a weekly wishlist, and I've decided to no longer do one here. Thanks to the wonderful addiction of Pinterest, I'm posting all my wishlist items there.

Thanks for still being here. And I hope to see you all again real soon. :D
